On July 18, 2014, Institute of Blue Economy Research was approved to be established in Weihai Nanhai New District. The Institute of Blue Economy Research is the staff, consulting and implementation agency for promoting blue economy construction in Weihai.

　　As a comprehensive scientific research institute integrating production, education and research, the institute has two industrial modules, namely marine equipment and marine biological engineering, and has a pilot test base and an industrial demonstration base of 16,000 square meters. Cooperating with research institutes and enterprises such as Ocean University of China, Institute of Oceanography of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qingdao Institute of Biomass Energy and Bioprocess Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of China Academy of Fishery Sciences, Yantai University, Dalian University of Technology, National University of Defense Technology, and Shenzhen Graduate School of Tsinghua University, Institute of Blue Economy Research provids comprehensive scientific research support services for the blue ocean economic construction of Weihai City.

　　The institute has been approved to establish Collaborative Innovation Center for Marine Oil and Gas Equipment Testing Technology of Shandong Province, Oil and Gas Equipment Industry Alliance of Weihai Nanhai New District, Shandong Collaborative Innovation Center for Marine Carbon Asset Engineering Technology, and provincial-level Maker Space e-home, etc. We will recruit talents in the fields of Carbon sequestration, offshore equipment and military-civilian integration, and cooperate with domestic top research institutes in deep production, research and research. In August 2018, the Institute assisted the Ministry of Natural Resources in Marine Strategic Planning and Economics, Conservation International (CI), and Third institute of oceanography of ministry of natural resources successfully host the 2018 Blue Carbon Initiative International Conference. In October 2018, as a co-organizer, participated in the organization of the "Seventh World Congress on Oceans."。
